BIOGRAPHY

BIOGRAPHY

At the heart of YAM’s work is a thematic exploration of binary systems and a questioning of various, frequently reproduced constructs within society (gender, power, perception, music...) and the question: What happens when familiar systems are broken down and new possibilities and spaces emerge? YAM works in series. As a result of this engagement with various themes, reference models, and phenomena, each series takes on a different painterly form and is not subject to any uniformity or recognizable logic. (R. Wagner) Her artistic career is closely linked to the German artist, composer, and legendary gallery owner Achim Kubinski (1951–2013) and his gallery “Olgastrasse 109.” Achim Kubinski exhibited YAM’s works in the mid-1990s at his galleries in Stuttgart and New York, as well as at the Venice Biennale. In addition, he curated her first solo exhibition in the U.S. in 1995 at the Angel Orensanz Foundation in New York City. In New York, she collaborated with figures from the local underground scene of the 1960s, such as Taylor Mead, Ira Cohen, Moe Tucker, and Henry Chalfant, which led to the creation of the book “YAM - Warum Kunst? - Painted Popsongs."

*Mann ohne Worte*

TITLE

Halten still. Man without words* is a self-portrait from 2008 and forms part of the series: For Popova Words leave my mouth like sticky tar, become surfaces, settle on the empty canvas. They remain still. It is like a snapshot whose meaning one does not know… it is like something in motion that comes to a standstill and yet is still there. (YAM 2026)

*Miss Pamela*

TITLE

Ein kurzer Strich, der einen Zustand transportiert oder eben nicht.(YAM 2026) EN: Miss Pamela* is a tribute to ‘Pamela des Barres’, a cultural icon (author, performer, groupie, musician) in the 1960s and 1970s in Los Angeles rock and camp scene, and a member of the GTOs: Girls Together Outrageously. Just like the ‘Man Without Words’, she is part of the series: ‘Für Popowa’ from 2008 Here, she stands as a counter-model for me – a way of living through experimentation, free from external constraints or defining words; a freedom, an energy that is deconstructed and direct. I wanted to follow this, with a direct stroke that turns the hair into eyes and simply leaves the stray facial hair standing out on the face. A stroke that must be applied directly, in acrylic, allowing no hesitation. A short stroke that either conveys a state of being or simply does not. (YAM 2026)
