BIOGRAPHY

BIOGRAPHY

Working across digital rendering, printed sculpture and moving image, Tobias Tarland translates fragilities of existence into a timeless, unlocatable parallel world. Living skeletal animals, enigmatic creatures and figures suspended in states of transition populate his stages. The contradictions of human nature, the fragile relationship between civilization and nature, and the tension between spirituality, alienation and longing are among the central motifs of Tarland’s work. Born in 1988 in southern Germany, Tarland lives and works in Berlin. Drawing from the visual language of the European Old Masters as well as from digital new media – different entry points into his single evolving cosmos – he layers symbolic imagery with sociocultural excavation to create atmospheres of wonder, unease and ambiguity. Tenderness and latent violence, attraction and repulsion are the forces that animate his work. ‘What preoccupies me above all,’ Tarland has said, ‘is the sensitive in a world full of quiet brutality – a reality my work does not lament, but seeks to understand.

Rhymes of Rupture

TITLE

"Rhymes of Rupture" is a cycle of twelve digital 3D tableaus, three years in the making, that converges in a single video work. The series maps a world defined by fracture – alienation from culture, from nature, from one another – and the search for identity within it. It tells stories of creatures spellbound between knowledge and ignorance, questioning what is natural and what is artificial, longing to reconnect with the living world and environments they have turned away from. Here, symbolism and staging serve as instruments of a narrative that unfolds intuitively rather than in sequence. Each image challenges viewers to question their own perception: Which of my experiences shape what I feel? Which ideologies determine the questions I ask? "Rhymes of Rupture" is an invitation to confront these impulses and remain open to the uncertain. Limited Edition of 5.

One Act

TITLE

'One Act' is the first figure in 'Don't Breathe To The Rhythm Of The World', a series of twelve sculptures about the struggle between intimacy and withdrawal — to others, to nature, to life at large. Each figure embodies a human archetype, a distinct response to a world that simultaneously attracts and repels. This one is the threshold figure — the one who has not yet moved, but must. Limited Edition of 5.
