Simona Mancheva (b. 1989, Kavadarci) is a visual artist who works in various media and touches upon subjects of importance to society. Part of her artistic practice and approach, in many aspects, can be perceived as activist. The topics she deals with in her art span from sexual workers’ rights and air pollution to perspectives of women's body and image in society. In her works (paintings, installations, photographs, documentary projects, performances), the story and the notion that art and creation are not exclusive to the artist are important. On the other hand, the artists must take a stand on the significant issues surrounding them. When people ask her why she treats such topics, she says: “Without even thinking about them, they are here!” Conscious that she opens up problematic questions and with a critical approach towards the context she lives in, she brings a unique expression in her works that sometimes go deep into problems challenging to handle through painting only. “Painting is not enough,” she claims. Therefore, she works with documentary photography, statistical data, research, and similar to show such topics more directly to the audience.
