BIOGRAPHY

BIOGRAPHY

Ralf Schmerberg is one of Germany’s most extraordinary multidisciplinary artists. As an artist, filmmaker, photographer and visionary, he has for decades transcended traditional genre boundaries, creating works that conceive of art not as an object, but as an experience, a social dialogue and a lived utopia. His practice combines visual art, film, photography, installation, music and social intervention into a unique artistic language. Schmerberg’s works revolve around the major questions of our time – identity, spirituality, community, sustainability and the search for a new form of human coexistence. His works are less answers than invitations to question one’s own perceptions and to embrace new perspectives. With the founding of MaHalla in Berlin, Ralf Schmerberg has created one of Europe’s most ambitious cultural projects. From an almost forgotten industrial hall on the historic AEG site, he has developed not merely an exhibition space, but a vibrant institution – an open organism for art, music, film, performance, research and social exchange. Through years of vision, dedication and tireless initiative, Schmerberg transformed what was once an abandoned factory hall into a place where creative freedom is renegotiated anew every day. For him, MaHalla is itself a work of art – a living Gesamtkunstwerk that grows with every person who enters it. In this context, monumental architecture becomes the medium for his artistic vision. Schmerberg regards spaces as emotional resonators, whose atmosphere is just as significant as the works they house. His vision of a ‘church without religion’ describes a place where art is not merely consumed but experienced – as a unifying force between people from the most diverse backgrounds and disciplines.   His entire body of work is characterised by a rare combination of poetic sensitivity and visionary thinking. Ralf Schmerberg does not create self-contained works of art – he creates systems, encounters and spaces for experience. His art begins where the individual object ends, and unfolds its greatest power in the interplay of people, space and time. He thus belongs to that rare generation of artists whose most significant work exists not only on canvas or film, but continues to grow as a living cultural infrastructure.

Indarella

TITLE

INDARELLA is not a film in the classical sense. It is a meditation. A revelation. A cinematic space of consciousness that completely dissolves the boundaries between documentation, poetry, visual arts, and spiritual experience. Over five years and during 216 shooting days, Ralf Schmerberg created a work of extraordinary radicalism – free from dramaturgical conventions, beyond any linear narrative. INDARELLA follows no plot. The film follows the rhythm of life itself. With the sensitivity of a visual nomad, Schmerberg guides the viewer through the pulsing heart of India – not as a traveler, but as a seeker. His camera does not observe, it listens. It encounters people, rituals, landscapes, and moments with a deep humility, creating a hypnotic mosaic that addresses our perception rather than our intellect. Every image possesses the power of a painting. Every cut feels like a breath. Every sound opens a space in which time loses its meaning. INDARELLA does not demand to be understood – the film wants to be experienced. Precisely therein lies its revolutionary power. While cinema traditionally tells stories, Schmerberg creates a space of experience. He replaces plot with presence, dramaturgy with consciousness, and information with intuition. His images speak a universal language that directly targets our senses and leads the viewer on a journey inward. The monumental visual power in 4K and the immersive soundscape turn INDARELLA into a total work of art that reaches far beyond the medium of film. It is an audiovisual installation in motion – an invitation not to search for beauty, but to fully encounter it. For Ralf Schmerberg, the creation of INDARELLA itself became a spiritual practice. The camera transformed from a director's tool into an instrument of mindfulness. The filmmaker became an observer, the production a pilgrimage. This uncompromising dedication is palpable in every single shot. INDARELLA reminds us that true art does not need to be explained. It touches us. It changes our view. And sometimes it opens a space in which, for a fleeting moment, we recognize the wonder of our own existence again.
